Autism & Law Enforcement Education Coalition (ALEC) is a program created by Captain William Cannata from The Arc South Norfolk, MA. This workshop provides an overview of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) including growth rates, common characteristics, effective communication methods, behavioral symptoms, sensory issues, and practical skills on how to effectively interact and respond to an emergency involving a person with ASD. Our training is facilitated by our local chapter ALEC coordinators Craig Treadway and Kevin King. Mr. Treadway has worked with first responders for over 20 years as DeSoto County Prosecuting Attorney and Youth Court Judge. Sergeant King has been with the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Department for 15 years, 6 years’ active duty in the Army, and 18 years in the National Guard. This presentation will provide information on how first responders can recognize and appropriately interact with an individual with ASD. Special tactics, response techniques, rescue techniques, patient care, search and rescue, and real life incidents will be discussed.
